It started with a phone call to Scovell Remodeling wondering if there was any chance the homeowner could sneak in a quick master bath remodel over the next couple months. But as the phone call went on it became clear that a quick makeover, hastily planned, would be short sighted. What the homeowners affectionately referred to as their Old Sagamore rambler had an upstairs floorplan with quite a few drawbacks: a siloed hall bathroom, inconveniently located for both of the bedrooms it served; a master bathroom smaller than that of their children’s; tiny closets and more. What they really needed was bigger than a quick cosmetic makeover. Walls needed to move! The master bedroom itself needed to move!
We began to rethink the layout. The master bedroom moved to the back of the house, grabbing the so-called rambling hallway and old hall bath to become a new ensuite. The old master became a child’s room, carving out a space between it and another bedroom to form a jack and jill for the elementary aged sisters. Beyond this, a laundry room, office and mudroom were worked into the scope as well.
The team then turned its attention to design. If this project was to be done, it was not to neglect aesthetics. Inspiration from the homeowner’s 3-ring binder full of plastic page protected magazine cut-outs that had been collected for years was brought into the fold. Pattern play, millwork and cabinet details dominated the conversation.
Wallpaper adorns many of the walls in the remodeled areas.
And where wallpaper is absent, interesting carpentry details take center stage. Like the master bathroom which features a trellis-and-mirror water closet door and tub front. Or the new upstairs hallway lined with wainscoting.
This existing window became a focal point with the addition of a cozy bench seat in one of the girls’ bedrooms.
Our client couldn't resist the opportunity to also add a splash of wallpaper to the mudroom and upstairs office.
